An Italian castle dating back to the early 11th century is now on the market for $4.16 million.

Mansion Global reports the 102,257-square-foot residence with 10 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms is located on a 1.2-acre property in Landriano, roughly 15 miles south of Milan. Originally constructed by the powerful Landriani family as a military fortress, it was sold in 1531 to the Tavernas, another prominent family that removed the towers and battlements to create a more residential experience.

“With the Taverna family, it became an elegant Renaissance home with frescoes—less severe and more for receptions,” said Diletta Giorgolo of Italy Sotheby’s International Realty, who added the castle’s location is also part of its value. “It’s ideal because you’re close to the city, but you’re already on the way down to the seaside. It’s also an easy reach from the airport and Germany, Switzerland and Austria, so it’s centrally located.”

Giorgolo observed the castle could also be renovated into a hotel or a commercial property, but she warned the building needs extensive work because the current owners did not enact a complete renovation after buying it in the 1980s.
