The homebuyers of 2024 are more interested in acquiring residential properties with sensory gardens and pickleball courts but not Tuscan kitchens, according to a new forecast from Zillow Group (NASDAQ:Z, ZG).
In a data analysis of nearly 300 home features and design styles mentioned in for-sale listing descriptions, Zillow highlighted the keywords showing up far more frequently compared to listings published one year ago.
“When certain keywords appear in a rising share of listings, it’s a signal that today’s home buyers may be gravitating toward those features,” said Amanda Pendleton, Zillow’s home trends expert. “Real estate agents are uniquely attuned to subtle changes in what buyers want, and they often get a first look at the latest and greatest features going into newly built homes. Savvy listing agents will highlight those trending, in-demand features when marketing a home for sale.”
According to Zillow, the buyers of 2024 are keeping an eye out for properties featuring a brutalist-inspired design style that includes blackened steel casement windows, raw concrete floors and jagged patinated bronze light fixtures; sensory gardens or pathways designed to engage all five senses; cold plunge pools; pickleball courts; classic Murano glass chandeliers; and murals (the DIY wallpaper variety, not so much the Diego Rivera-type creations).
On the flipside, fewer buyers are interested in shou sugi ban, the traditional Japanese wood preservation technique that involves charring the wood’s surface to create a blackened, weathered finish; the “cloffice,” a tight combination of closet and home office; and the Tuscan kitchen (sorry, Lidia).
