A new grassroots movement in Nebraska is seeking to put a pair of property tax reform proposals on the ballot for the November 2026 election.
Nebraska Public Media reports Advocates For All Nebraskans (AFAN) has launched two statewide ballot initiative petitions. One petition calls for the slashing of the current property tax rates by 50% – this would require roughly 90,000 signatures to get on the ballot. The other petition seeks to create a constitutional amendment to limit annual property valuation increases as 3% – that would require about 130,000 signatures.
“To ignore the voices of the people, the Nebraska families, farmers and ranchers, our small business owners, that are being taxed out of their homes and livelihoods, is simply no longer acceptable,” Eric Underwood, the registered agent for AFAN, said in a news release.
This is the second ongoing effort to put property tax reform on the Nebraska ballot. Another initiative dubbed “EPIC 2.0” is seeking to eliminate property taxes, along with income and inheritance taxes.
Gov. Jim Pillen called a special legislative session to propose cutting property taxes by 50%. However, lawmakers rejected that request and instead approved a 3.5% increase in the state’s property tax credit fund.
