Kansas lawmakers are considering a resolution that would update the state constitution with a new cap on the amount that a home’s assessed value can jump each year.

KMBC reports Senate Concurrent Resolution 1616 from Republican Sen. Caryn Tyson will mandate that a home’s assessed value cannot rise more than 3% a year, unless the homeowner builds an addition or makes major upgrades or the homeowner’s locality changes the zoning or fixes an assessment error. The cap would stay in place even if the house is sold.

The resolution, which does not change property tax rates, has the support of 15 other GOP senators. If the legislature approves the bill, voters would be able to weigh in on the measure in an August referendum vote.
