Kentucky legislators are considering a proposed constitutional amendment that would freeze property tax increases for homeowners 65 and older.
WDRB reports Senate Bill 51 does not exempt seniors from property taxes but would lock the taxable value of the property from either the homeowner turns 65 or the year they purchase the property, whichever comes later.
“For instance, if your home was $200,000 when you turn 65, and it goes up to $300,000, you will still pay the tax on the $200,000 in whatever rate it is,” said Sen. Mike Nemes (R-Shepherdsville).
The proposal passed Kentucky’s Senate and is now being considered by the General Assembly. If lawmakers in that chamber vote to approve it, the proposal would appear on a statewide ballot as a constitutional amendment in the 2027 General Election ballot.
