A pair of nonprofits have submitted plans to San Francisco’s city government for the construction of a complex that would provide affordable housing for artists.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Artists Hub and Market and Mercy Housing of California proposed the project, which would be based on Market Street and encompass approximately 100 apartments in studio, one- and two-bedroom units. The tenants would be artists or individuals in arts administration, along with their families, and residency would require a household income that is either at or below 80% of the San Francisco Area Median Income.
The complex would also feature a community center, studios, rehearsal and practice rooms, a 99-seat black box theater and a ground-level cafe.
If approved, the new complex will be built on the site of the McRoskey Mattress Co. showroom, which is housed in a three-story building constructed in 1925.
