The last full-size Kmart operating in the US is scheduled to cease operations on Oct. 20.
The New York Post reported the 90,000-square-foot store in the Long Island hamlet of Bridgehampton, New York, opened in 1996 and was part of a chain that encompassed more than 2,000 locations at its peak. Kmart traces its roots to a Detroit five-and-dime store opened by Sebastian Spering Kresge in 1899. Kmart Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2002 and merged with Sears Holdings in 2005, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018. Transform Holdco LLC, also known as Transformco, acquired the Kmart and Sears assets in 2019.
The last US location with the Kmart brand is a small store in Miami that is closer in size to a convenience store than a department store. However, Kmart-branded stores still operate in Guam and the US Virgin Islands.
