Russ Vought, the acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), complied with a court order to request $145 million from the Federal Reserve to fund the agency.

In late December, US District Judge Amy Berman, an Obama appointee, decreed the CFPB must continue to receive funding from the Federal Reserve, overruling Vought’s attempt to refuse funding by claiming the central bank has been operating at a loss since 2022 and has no “combined earnings” to fund the CFPB.

Vought, who also serves as director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, has attempted to shut down the CFPB through mass layoffs and by ordering work stoppages. However, his efforts have been repeatedly thwarted in the courts.

The New York Times reports Vought inserted the declaration “I disagree with the opinion and order” in the formal funding request. Next month, the full US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit will hear Vought’s appeal of the ruling to keep the CFPB operational.
