The Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, has selected Rhode Island-based Gilbane Building Co. and Massachusetts-based Prestige Construction Group to construct a new stadium in Richmond, Virginia.
According to the companies, the 10,000-seat Richmond Diamond District Ballpark will be ready for the 2026 baseball season and will have an industrial, warehouse style designed as a tribute to the city’s railway lineage. In addition to the Flying Squirrels, the stadium will also be the home field for the Virginia Commonwealth University baseball team.
The stadium is being built near The Diamond, which has served as the team’s venue since 1985. While the companies did not mention what will become of The Diamond, the trade news site Construction & Demolition Recycling noted it could be demolished.
The financial aspects of the new partnership were not disclosed.
“We’re excited to have formed a dream team with Gilbane and Prestige to build our new home,” said Lou Dibella, managing general partner of the Flying Squirrels. “Their experience speaks for itself, and I am confident they will deliver a first-class venue for our fans and the Richmond community.”
