The death warrant on a Georgia man convicted of the 2033 murder of two real estate agents expired as his lawyers fought to get him clemency.
Stacey Ian Humphreys was found guilty Sept. 25, 2007, on two counts of malice murder in the deaths of Lori Brown and Cynthia Williams inside a model home in Cobb County on Nov. 3, 2003. Humphreys’ legal team filed multiple appeals over the past two decades, delaying the implementation of the death sentence that was scheduled for Dec. 17.
WSB Radio reports a Fulton County judge held an emergency hearing on the matter last week when attorneys for Humphreys raised concerns about conflicts of interest involving two members of the parole board – one previously worked as a victims’ advocate and had close contact with the families of slain realtors while the other served as sheriff of Glynn County, where Humphreys’ trial was moved due to pretrial publicity.
Both the Dec. 17 scheduled execution date and the Dec. 24 deadline on the death warrant have expired. Humphreys’ attorneys are seeking to have the parole board commute his sentence to life in prison. At the moment, Humphreys’ execution is on indefinite hold pending the rescheduling of his clemency hearing.
