The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), Fannie Mae (OTCQB: FNMA) and Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) will phase out their use of the artificial intelligence products offered by Anthropic.
In a post to his personal X account, FHFA Director Bill Pulte announced, “U.S. Federal Housing, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are terminating all use of Anthropic products, including the use of its Claude platform.” Pulte shared a Feb. 27 Truth Social post by President Trump announcing that all federal agencies were to cease using the products, calling Anthropic a “radical left, woke company” and its executives “Leftwing nut jobs.”
Trump’s order and insults followed the refusal by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to allow the Department of Defense to use its products for mass surveillance or autonomous armed drones. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth designated Anthropic a supply chain risk, which effectively blacklisted the company as a vendor serving the federal government. The company has threatened to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration, stating the blacklisting of its products was “never before publicly applied to an American company.”
It is unclear how long it will take the FHFA and the government-sponsored enterprises to exorcise the Anthropic products from its systems. Trump gave all federal agencies up to six months to phase out their use of the company’s products.
