Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Sandra Thompson will resign on Jan. 19, one day before President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn into office.

Bloomberg first reported Thompson’s decision to step down from the FHFA leadership; the agency has not issued an official statement on her departure. Thompson was sworn in on June 22, 2022, having previously served as the FHFA’s deputy director of the Division of Housing Mission and Goal​s since March 2013. Earlier in her career, she was director of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.’s Division of Risk Management Supervision.

Thompson’s departure comes amid media reports that the incoming Trump administration is putting together a plan to privatize the government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Thompson is the latest Biden administration appointee to resign ahead of Trump’s return to the White House – Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler and Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Michael S. Barr have also announced plans to leave their jobs before the Trump inauguration.
