Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte has filed new criminal referrals accusing New York Attorney General Letitia James of mortgage fraud.

CBS News reports Pulte sent a letter to Florida prosecutors claiming James could have submitted false information on her homeowner’s insurance application to Fort Lauderdale-based Universal Property Insurance. He also contacted Illinois prosecutors alleging James may have falsified information on an application to Allstate, which is headquartered in the Chicago area.

President Trump confirmed Pulte’s action in a Truth Social post that stated James “referred again for criminal prosecution for alleged homeowner insurance fraud.” Pulte made no public comment on his actions.

The new criminal referrals follow the Trump administration’s failed efforts to secure a mortgage fraud indictment against James, who successfully prosecuted Trump for valuation fraud prior to his return to the White House. Last November, a federal judge dismissed the bank fraud indictment filed in Virginia on the grounds that the prosecutor, interim US Attorney Lindsey Halligan, was unlawfully appointed to her position. Two federal grand juries rejected the administration’s attempts to re-indict James.

Abbe Lowell, an attorney for James, accused the Trump administration of “abusing their power to pursue a vendetta against her by trying to rename, refile, and repeat baseless allegations. “These desperate tactics will fail — just as every previous attempt has failed — and exposes an administration that has abandoned its responsibility to the American people in favor of petty political payback.”
