Students at a college in Florida will have the chance to learn construction skills that will be used to address a local housing shortage.
WTXL.com reports Gadsden Technical College (GTC) in Quincy, Florida, has partnered with Jones Construction in a program where students in the Building Maintenance and Management course will construct tiny houses each semester.
“They start with the foundation, doing the flooring, plumbing, electric, mechanical, all the way up to roofing,” said Kerwyn Jones-Wilson, CEO of Jones Construction, adding, “When you are done with our program at Gadsden Technical College, you can go right into leadership or a superintendent type of position.”
The program, which begins in August, will also help provide affordable housing solutions in Gadsden County, which has a shortage of 760 apartments.
“When we can put homes in the community at a regular rate, not an expensive rate, I really think we can help the housing shortage in Gadsden County,” said GTC Director Willie Jackson.
