The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has agreed to a request by Senate Democrats led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) to investigate cuts to the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) fair housing program workforce.
“I am pleased to announce that the GAO is taking up our request to investigate co-President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s dangerous cuts to fair housing enforcement at HUD,” said Warren in a statement, noting the GAO confirmed her request was within the scope of its authority.”
Last month, a district court temporarily blocked HUD’s cancellation of grant funding to nonprofits involved in the investigation of alleged housing discrimination. The department was sued by three nonprofits that stood to lose $30 million in grant funds. Warren also claimed that 80% of HUD’s fair housing workforce was being fired.
The GAO added that “staff with the required skills will be available shortly to initiate an engagement.”
