Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has pledged to veto any proposed legislation that limits property tax relief to seniors only.
In a posting on X, DeSantis responded to an article that advocated having millennials and Gen Zers to shoulder the burden of property taxes while allowing seniors to be exempt from the tax burden.
“Age-specific property tax relief is a non-starter,” DeSantis declared. “Making homestead properties tax-free would be a major boon to young families who will be better able to make ends meet.”
The governor added, “Why saddle anyone — but particularly young people — will rising local taxes based on increased assessments, which are nothing more than an unrealized gain? So far, state lawmakers have already put forward at least a dozen amendment proposals touching on property tax exemptions or assessed value caps.”
DeSantis has advocated for eliminating property taxes, although the state legislature is not following his suggestion in its proposals to address tax relief for homeowners. The legislature’s proposed amendments would need to gain 60% of voter approval in next year’s general election to become law.

Zero taxes at retirement should be the norm. At age 62 or 66.5 a person will have paid their debt to society. Taxes is a permanent sentence that very few benefit from. When is it enough. People wealth is taxed when they die, why in the wide world of sports do we need all those taxes, when most do not benefit the people when and where they need it, like health insurance.
Property taxes have skyrocketed in last 5 years along with homeowners insurance and HOA/Condo fees making it VERY difficult for Buyers to qualify for their mortgages.
DOGE Audits are necessary and relevant to evaluate the real cost of services from property taxes. First, property tax breaks to those who use their property as a Primary residence.
Home ownership has and should continue to be valued as a way of Living and building financial strength.
The increase in taxes each year only goes to pay more pet projects. In Texas we are giving Hollywood millions , why? Shouldn’t a multi billion dollar industry sustain themselves?
Just as one example?
The money has to come from somewhere so if this is just taking from Peter to pay Paul, it makes no sense. You have to eliminate the issues causing the tax to be so high.
If you do it to only primary residence and increase for the snowbirds you could cause a lot more inventory than this hurricane ravaged state can afford.
It makes sense in that the government should not be able to extort money from you each year in order for you to keep a roof over your head and the property you paid for being taken from you.
Yes, issues need to be solved as well, but while they are working on that, we could only hope, shift the burden.
All primary residences should be property tax free.
1/- Primary residences should be property tax free.
2/- Secondary residences should be taxed based on market value with a rate of 1.5% (California is 1.05%)
3/- Income tax rates need to have to cover the loss of tax from 1/- only
4/- Sales tax should be increased or created for futures needed.
