Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has pledged to veto any proposed legislation that limits property tax relief to seniors only.

In a posting on X, DeSantis responded to an article that advocated having millennials and Gen Zers to shoulder the burden of property taxes while allowing seniors to be exempt from the tax burden.

“Age-specific property tax relief is a non-starter,” DeSantis declared. “Making homestead properties tax-free would be a major boon to young families who will be better able to make ends meet.”

The governor added, “Why saddle anyone — but particularly young people — will rising local taxes based on increased assessments, which are nothing more than an unrealized gain? So far, state lawmakers have already put forward at least a dozen amendment proposals touching on property tax exemptions or assessed value caps.”

DeSantis has advocated for eliminating property taxes, although the state legislature is not following his suggestion in its proposals to address tax relief for homeowners. The legislature’s proposed amendments would need to gain 60% of voter approval in next year’s general election to become law.
