A historic bank building in Brooklyn that has been vacant since the pandemic may soon have a new life as a cannabis retail store.
According to a report from the Greenpointers blog, the Greenpoint Savings Bank building, a Neo-Classical style structure that opened in 1906, is the desired location for the Altitude Cannabis Club. Public comment on this potential new tenant will be fielded during the next Brooklyn Community Board 1 meeting on Oct. 8, with the board’s Cannabis Review Committee reviewing the application and offering its recommendation on whether to proceed with the application. New York State’s Cannabis Control Board will have the ultimate say on whether this new tenant can move in.
The limestone building was designed by acclaimed architects Helmle & Huberty and features a granite base, a recessed portico with four Doric columns topped with a triangular pediment, a large dome and patterned slate shingles. It is based in both the Greenpoint Historic District, and the State and National Register Historic District boundaries. The building last changed hands in 2018 when it sold for $10 million; it functioned as a Capitol One branch before being closed in 2020 during the pandemic. Several proposals to redevelop the property – including a pair of housing proposals – never came to fruition.
