Single-family housing starts in October came in at a rate of 874,000, according to data from the US Census Bureau and Department of Housing and Urban Development; the report was delayed by the 43-day government shutdown. October’s level was 5.4% above the revised September figure of 829,000.

Privately-owned housing starts in October were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.24 million, which is 4.6% below the revised September estimate of 1.3 million and is 7.8% below the October 2024 rate of 1.35 million.

Single-family authorizations in October were at a rate of 876,000, a 0.5% dip from the revised September figure of 880,000. Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in October were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.412 million, a 0.2% drop the revised September rate of 1.415 million and 1.1% below the October 2024 rate of 1.42 million.

Single-family housing completions in October were at a rate of 1 million, a 6% increase from the revised September rate of 952,000. Privately-owned housing completions in October were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.38 million, a 1.1% uptick from the revised September estimate of 1.37 million but is 15.3% below the October 2024 rate of 1.63 million.
