The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced a six-month delay in the implementation of the mandatory energy codes initiated by the Biden administration.
The delay will push back the compliance dates for adopting the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and ASHRAE 90.1-2019 as the minimum energy-efficiency standards for certain single-family and multifamily housing programs. With these delays, the compliance dates will now occur either this coming November or in the spring of 2026, depending on the programs being impacted.
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has cited Home Innovation Research Labs data to argue compliance with the 2021 IECC would add more than $20,000 to the price of a new home – but in practice, home builders estimated the increased costs were as high as $31,000.
