Ahead of tomorrow’s presidential debate, the Biden administration is announcing $85 million in grant funding for the Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing (PRO Housing) program, which is designed to lower housing costs and remove barriers to affordable housing production and preservation.
The grants were rewarded in a competition that saw applications from over 175 communities in 47 states and territories. The competition was coordinated by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which plans to release an additional $100 million in funding later this year in a second round of the competition.
In a press statement, Vice President Kamala Harris declared the grants were part of the administration’s focus on addressing the evaporation in housing affordability opportunities.
“Today, I am proud to announce that we are taking a critical step forward by investing $85 million to help more than 20 communities throughout our country remove barriers to building more affordable housing,” Harris said.
“President Biden and Vice President Harris have prioritized reducing housing costs,” added HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman. “As I travel across the country, I hear from people all the time, including builders, elected officials, and other stakeholders, about how difficult it is to build housing. This is why I am pleased to announce our first round of PRO Housing funding, which will provide communities with incentives to address their local housing barriers. This expands on our ongoing efforts to lower housing costs by increasing the housing supply.”
What does it mean to “remove barriers” where are the funds actually going? Sounds like more political rhetoric for government waste. I’m sure very little will go to the people who need it. Also might be an effort to continue to build their 15 minute cities they want.
There are people who are not mature enough to own a house. We should make sure any aids will benefit those that are ready to own a house. Let’s not waste a lot of tax payer’s money.
I think this move is a great idea if that means smaller homes for lower income or first time homebuyers or even empty nesters downsizing to a smaller property. Because right now the market is full of quarter of $1 million homes large subdivisions for growing families, not for single or couples just starting out or widows needing to downsize. Small one and two bedroom homes would be beneficial to the market or even studio Type homes . Just something small and affordable.
