Democrats in Iowa’s House of Representatives have proposed a property tax relief plan that would freeze rates for seniors and offer rebates for all homeowners.

KEYC reports the proposal sets a 4% limit on the annual increases for property taxes beginning in 2028 while freezing property tax rates for Iowans ages 65 and older.  If passed, Iowa homeowners will receive a $1,000 tax rebate while renters receive $500.

A similar plan was proposed by House Democrats in the 2025 legislative session, which ended without any property tax relief being passed.

Republican lawmakers are expected to announce their property tax relief proposals in coming weeks. Gov. Kim Reynolds is expected to offer her own plan during next week’s Condition of the State Address.
