Kansas has become the latest state to consider the elimination of property taxes.
KSNT.com reports Rep. Blake Carpenter has put forth a proposal for a constitutional amendment that would eliminate property taxes, along with vehicle taxes and the state income tax. Carpenter, a Republican, argued that increased sales taxes and the elimination of some tax exemptions would compensate for the erasure of current tax revenue sources.
However, Carpenter added this change to the tax code would take time to enact – 13 years before property taxes could be eliminated, six years to remove vehicle taxes and 40 years before income taxes disappear.
Blake’s proposed amendment would need to be approved by the legislature before voters would have the final approval.
