A leader of the movement to abolish Michigan’s property taxes announced her candidacy to become the state’s governor.

MLive.com reports Karla Wagner, the executive director of Ax MI Tax, has filed to become a candidate in next year’s gubernatorial race. In addition to her candidacy, Wagner is working to get Ax MI Tax’s initiative to eliminate property taxes on next fall’s ballot.

“I look at it like this, I didn’t do Ax MI Tax to run for governor – I’m running for governor because of Ax MI Tax,” Wagner said in a social media video. “Number one, we need more exposure. We need statewide exposure for the next three months to get the signatures we need to get this on the ballot. I figured that the best way to get that statewide exposure when we have very little money is by running for an office that will give me a platform to speak about Ax MI Tax.”

Michigan’s Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who has gained national prominence within the Democratic Party, cannot seek re-election due to term limits. The race for governor has already generated a crowded field including US Rep. John James and Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt on the Republican side, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist on the Democratic side, and longtime Democratic Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan running as an independent.

Wagner, who self-identifies as a “Christian constitutionalist conservative,” pledged to make property tax elimination the key focus of her governorship.

“The governor cannot eliminate property tax, but the governor can certainly facilitate or help to facilitate the elimination of property tax,” she said. “If we get it done through a citizen initiative petition, the governor will be there to assist the implementation of what it will take to fulfill the property tax elimination prophecy of what we want to do.”
