With President Trump deploying National Guard soldiers across Washington, DC, to fight crime while pledging to repeat that action in other cities, one might wonder which American cities have the highest crime rates.

According to an analysis by The Hill of FBI data from 2024 murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, Memphis has the nation’s worst crime rate with 2,501 violent crimes per 100,000 people. Year to date, the city recorded 145 murder victims, while last year it saw 40.6 homicides per 100,000 residents. Even Democratic Mayor Paul Young was a crime victim – last June, a would-be kidnapper showed up at his residence with a taser, gloves, rope and duct tape.

Detroit ranked second with a violent crime rate of 1,781 per 100,00 and a rate of 31.2 homicides per 100,000 residents. The city recorded 203 homicides in 2024, a 19% year-over-year decline and the lowest level since 1965.

Baltimore ranked third with 1,606 violent crimes and 34.8 homicides per 100,000 people last year. As of July 1, the city recorded 68 homicides this year, a 22% year-over-year decline. President Trump has threatened to send National Guard soldiers into Baltimore, which sparked pushback from Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, both Democrats.

Kansas City, Missouri, ranked fourth with 1,547 violent offenses per 100,000 people in 2024 – this included a 12% year-over-year increase in nonfatal shootings and 144 homicide cases. Milwaukee placed fifth with 1,431 violent crimes per 100,000 in 2024 and year-to-date totals of 100 homicides and 293 rapes.

Albuquerque’s sixth place ranking was due to the last year’s 1,182 violent crimes occurred per 100,000 residents, which included 94 homicides reported – three fewer than in 2023. Seventh place Houston experienced 1,148 crimes per 100,000 people last year, including 320 murders and 13,354 burglaries. Much of Houston’s crime was attributed to a local nightlife that has become so violent that a “club unit” was created within the Houston Police Department to target bars and clubs with citations.

Nashville placed eighth with 1,124 violent crimes per 100,000 people, including a death toll of 104. Denver’s ninth place ranking was based on 993 violent crimes per 100,000 people, although the local police say year-to-date violent crime is down 7.31%.

And the tenth placed city is Washington, DC, where violent crime was recorded at 926 per 100,000 in 2024, Local officials say violent crime is down by 27% and is now at a 30-year low, although President Trump insists the city is overrun with miscreants.
