Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is proposing that senior homeowners in her state receive a 10% reduction on their property taxes.
CBS News reports Whitmer, a Democrat who is in the final year of her term, will officially announce the proposal in her State of the State speech on Feb. 25. The proposal calls for senior homeowners to receive a 10% refund on their annual property taxes, resulting in average savings of $345 per year.
The governor’s office added the proposal would result in $90 million in tax cuts, Michigan’s largest property tax break in over a decade.
“Michigan seniors who worked hard, played by the rules, and live on fixed incomes deserve stability,” said Whitmer in a statement. “As costs on the basics go up because of national economic uncertainty, we should work together to provide real relief to our seniors. In my budget this year, I’m proposing property tax relief for our seniors to save them hundreds of dollars a year, putting money back in their pockets they can use for groceries, gas, or gifts for the grandkids.”
