The Missouri House of Representatives approved a bill that would reduce the minimum property tax levy school districts can charge from $2.75 to $2.20 per $100 of assessed value.
KFVS reports the bill, if passed, would enact the reduction in the 2026–27 school year. The bill is designed so the levy would decrease as the assessed value of their property rises.
Rep. Tim Taylor, a Republican who sponsored the bill, said the change would not impact school finances.
“Now the taxpayers won’t be hurt by that because those schools were already being rolled up to $2.75 anyway,” said Taylor. “Taxpayers aren’t going to know any different. Not a single school is going to lose money addressing this particular issue here.”
The bill passed with bipartisan backing and will now moves to the Missouri Senate, where leaders said it would become the main focus for this year’s property tax relief efforts.
