The chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) criticized President Biden for invoking the Defense Production Act to boost production of electric heaters as part of the administration’s efforts to rid the housing market of gas heating appliances.
“The purpose of the Defense Production Act is to expand the supply of materials and services to protect the American people, not to advance a political agenda,” said Alicia Huey, who is also a custom home developer from Birmingham, Alabama. “Therefore, it is extremely disappointing that President Biden has elected to invoke the Defense Production Act in a blatant move to promote a policy agenda seeking to push American households towards electric heating in lieu of gas heating.”
Huey added there is an ongoing “extreme shortage of distribution transformers that have prevented the construction of badly needed housing developments, exacerbated the nation’s housing affordability crisis and frustrated recovery efforts in communities hit by natural disasters. NAHB has been calling on the administration to utilize the Defense Production Act to boost transformer output at existing facilities to address the growing supply chain crisis for distribution transformers that threatens the nation’s housing sector.”
Huey stated that she hoped the president “will reassess his priorities and provide funding under the Defense Production Act to jumpstart the production of badly needed transformers across the nation.”

Cheap shot at housing shortage. Much of the shortage is about AFFORDABLE housing. Consider the irratic materials costs and availability in the recent past. A shortage of skilled labor and a push to build Mc Mansions, That’s just a start.
It’s really all about out of control inflation and interest rates. We need less government control – not more – especially from the idiots who are running THIS government.
Moving the country, and the world, away from fossil fuels IS part of protecting citizens. Is the switch to renewables going to be difficult? Yes, of course. And if we sit around waiting for people to realize we’re at a crisis point before acting, it will be too late. I support Bidens efforts to start us in this direction. At least he has the guts to do what’s necessary, even if it’s unpopular.
Can you identify the crisis point? No, you can’t because one doesn’t exist except in the minds of those drinking the kool-aide. Wake up!
Biden continues to do everything possible to kill the housing market. Higher interest rates and unrealistic energy goals will make housing unaffordable to all but the very rich. In the meantime, Bob Dole cranks up his jet to fly where ever he pleases. Remember this when it comes time to vote!
There are so many dumb & blind people following the false threat that climate change will kill us all. That ignorance is dangerous and that’s why Biden is at the front of it.
Climate change is money maker for the rich to get richer. Al Gore was worth $1.5 million when he lost the presidential race in 2001. AL today, pushing green is worth $300+ million. He also owns an investment firm. His investors, investing in green am pretty sure. LOL
