Indiana Governor Mike Braun signed a public safety bill created in the wake of the murder of an Evansville realtor.

WEHT reports House Bill 1250 requires the state’s Department of Correction to provide seven days advance electronic notification to the county sheriff, prosecuting attorney and either the county or municipal chief of police on where it will release a serious violent felon from custody.

The bill, which passed unanimously through the Indiana House and Senate chambers, followed the murder of 74-year-old realtor Susan Haynie in August 2025. Her accused killer, Jamerus Parkman, had been released from prison after serving 12 years of a 35-year sentence for similar violent offenses, but the Evansville Police Department was not notified of Parkman’s release. Haynie was killed six months after Parkman’s release.

    • No, unfortunately this is not true. Death sentences do not deter and there are numerous studies on this. Furthermore, it costs more to go through all the legalities for a death sentence than it costs to keep a prisoner for his lifetime. I prefer life without parole for murderers such as in this case.

      • Carrying out the death sentence does prevent repeat offenses by that individual.

  2. It’s not man’s job to kill another under any circumstance. Against all spiritual law. We will all face who/what is to be faced once we leave this planet.

  4. AS A MALE REALTOR I HAVE HAD VARIOUS CLOSE CALLS SHOWING PROPERTY THAT I HAD LISTED. PREDITORS ARE PARTICULARLY LOOKING FOR WOMAN ALONE. I ALWAYS HAVE A MALE FRIEND COME ALONG WHEN I FIRST SHOW PROPERTY, AND WE BOTH HAVE THE RIGHT TO CARRY, AND THE PROSPECTIVE BUYER DOESN’T REALIZE WE ARE CARRYING TO PROTECT OURSELVES. WOMAN PLEASE DON’T SHOW PROPERTY WITHOUT A SECOND PERSON TAGGING ALONG.

    • Yes this! Never show a home alone or meet with a perspective client alone.
