As the year-end giving season kicks into gear, WalletHub has published this year’s edition of its Neediest Cities in America report.
WalletHub compared more than 180 cities across 28 key metrics – including child and adult poverty, food insecurity, homelessness, the lack of insurance, and homes lacking adequate plumbing and kitchens – to determine which city has the highest populations of the economically disadvantaged. Detroit topped this year’s list due to having the highest unemployment rate in the nation at 9.1%, the highest adult poverty rate, and the second-highest child poverty rate in the country.
“Detroit’s housing situation is far from ideal for many people,” the report added. “The city has the third-highest share of households lacking complete plumbing facilities and the 10th-highest share lacking complete kitchen facilities. It has the fifth-highest share of households without a computer and the seventh-highest share without a broadband internet connection, too.”
Rounding out the top five cities as being among the nation’s neediest were Brownsville, Texas; Shreveport, Louisiana; Cleveland; and Little Rock, Arkansas. At the other end of the list was Overland Park, Kansas, which ranked lowest at 182nd among the neediest cities.
“In the neediest cities, a large number of people lack access to adequate food, health care and shelter, but there are plenty of other less obvious issues that also need to be resolved,” said Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst. “The neediest cities need to address problems like high school dropout rates, lack of access to quality internet, overcrowded housing, poor mental health and more. Fixing these issues can lift people out of poverty, lower crime rates, and elevate people’s mental and physical health.”

It is so sad that Detroit which was once a shining star with the auto industry has gone so low. They need some new direction and new politics for help.
In Amerika!!!! So sad!!!
Just another Blue City run by Democrats decade after miserable decade. Definition of insanity: voting for the same people over and over again and getting the same results
There has been a Democratic mayor of Detroit since 1962 !!
Need I say more ??
There have been books written about all the scandals!!
No law and order
Slum neighbors
Always promises of making it better
Used to at least be confident you would be safe at least going to the downtown area – that is changing!!
The popular Greektown area has boarded up storefronts with gangs on one corner and cops on the other
Need all night prayer meetings for divine inspiration and salvation from drugs and such, – kids from the 1950’s have stories of prosperity, education and strong social fabric
I am sure all of you are not from Detroit. They have done amazing things here. Whole neighborhoods are being renovated (did you ever watch Bargain Block). I am a Realtor and real estate in the city is booming. Investors are rehabbing homes and selling them or renting them. Instead of going by statistics maybe people should come and look for themselves what is happening in Detroit. If it is so bad why is the population going up and businesses flocking to the city? Mike Duggan along with community leaders brought this city back in the last decade. He had a hard job after the thief Kwame Kilpatrick stole from this city taking bribes, grifting. No wonder Trump pardoned him he is his people I am sure he admired him for lining his pockets just like the Trump family does. Everything is politics with some of you.
Wow – those talking about Detroit being a blue city need to read further in the article to see that all the rest of those neediest cities are in red areas, LOL!
