The United Soccer League (USL) and Reno Pro Soccer have announced plans to build a stadium at the site of a former auto dealership in Reno, Nevada.
Nevada Sportsnet reports recently acquired the former Jones West Ford site for $16 million and plans to develop the property as a sports and entertainment district featuring a soccer-specific stadium. The details on the stadium, including whether it would be built with public funds, were not disclosed.
Reno had a USL team from 2017 to 2020 that played at the Reno Aces’ Greater Nevada Field Triple-A baseball stadium. Several attempts were later made to build a soccer-only stadium in the city, including an effort by Reno Pro Soccer to build a venue at the South Valleys Regional Park site.
Reno Pro Soccer said it planned to enlist local input to create the club’s including team name, brand colors and crest.
“As the USL continues to expand in the Western U.S., we’re excited about the potential of bringing professional soccer to Northern Nevada,” said Justin Papadakis, USL deputy CEO and chief real estate officer. “Reno is one of the fastest-growing mid-size cities in the country with a passionate soccer fan base. Add in a dedicated local ownership group with plans for a soccer-specific stadium in a prime location, and you have the foundation needed to build a successful club and raise Reno’s profile across the region.”
