The Kansas City Chiefs will announce their plans to relocate across state lines from Kansas City, Missouri, to the same-named city in Kansas.
The Kansas City Star, sourcing its coverage from unnamed “sources who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter,” reports the move will be officially announced following approval of top Kansas lawmakers, who are meeting today to discuss the potential move.
The Chiefs have agitated for a new domed stadium. The lease at Arrowhead Stadium, their home since 1972, expires in 2030. In April 2024, Jackson County voters rejected the 40-year extension of a local sales tax that would have financed major renovations at Arrowhead Stadium and funded a new stadium for the Kansas City Royals.
Kansas leaders have proposed paying for a new $3 billion domed stadium through its Sales Tax and Revenue (STAR) bonds program, which pays back developers with future sales tax revenue generated by tourists. The bonds can fund up to 70% of a new stadium project, although it is unclear what percent of a new Chiefs stadium will be publicly subsidized.
Missouri officials have sought to keep the Chiefs in their state with a rival incentive offer to fund up to 50% of stadium costs with public money. The team has not publicly commented on that offer.
