The future Robert F. Kennedy Memorial (RFK) Stadium in Washington, DC, was thrown into uncertainty when the congressional Continuing Resolution was abruptly pulled from consideration.
WJLA.com reported the DC Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act was part of the into the Continuing Resolution that is needed to keep the federal government funded through mid-March. The measure was designed to transfer control of the federally owned stadium campus to the District of Columbia city government, which would enable it to build a stadium at the site and develop commercial and residential properties while creating new open spaces.
However, the Continuing Resolution was abruptly pulled from consideration by House Speaker Mike Johnson after Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, the coordinators of President-elect Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, objected to much of the contents of the 1,500-page Continuing Resolution – Musk took to X stating that taxpayers should not pay for a new stadium, even though the RFK Stadium measure did not include project construction details. Trump also weighed in objecting to the Continuing Resolution, which is now being renegotiated.
Earlier this year, the National Park Service (NPS) has given its approval for the demolition of RFK Stadium – the agency owns the land where the stadium is based. The venue has not been used since 2019 and has been proposed as a new home for the Washington Commanders, which now play at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.
