Utah real estate professionals might want to start put together a new 10-year business development plan as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City.
The Utah capital previously hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002 and was the only city bidding for the 2034 event. Salt Lake City will also host the 2032 Winter Paralympics.
Today’s announcement culminates a 12-year effort to return the Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City, which established an exploratory committee in February 2012 to plan for the event. The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee named Salt Lake City as the U.S. choice for a future bid in 2018, with the goal of securing either the 2030 or 2034 event.
Earlier in the day, the IOC awarded the 2030 Winter Olympics to France, which will spread the outdoor events across the French Alps while the indoor events will be held in the resort city of Nice along the French Riviera.
The 2024 Summer Olympics begins in Paris on Friday, and the 2028 event is slated for Los Angeles. Italy will host the 2026 Winter Olympics, with the main events divided between with the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
