Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has endorsed Zohran Mamdani’s candidacy to become New York City mayor, citing his focus on “affordability.”

The New York Post reports the senator and Mamdani appeared together at the DC37 union building in Manhattan, where the Massachusetts heaped praise on the Democratic socialist.

“For me, New York City is the place to start the conversation for Democrats on how affordability is the central issue, the central reason to be a Democrat, and that delivering on it in meaningful, tangible ways that will touch working families is why we’re here,” Warren said.

Warren added that Mamdani epitomizes “the Democratic message” and insisted he was “on the front lines in that fight out there, fighting for families.” Among Mamdani’s campaign pledges are a freeze in the costs of rent-controlled housing and the creation of supermarkets owned and operated by the city government.

Warren framed her endorsement by denigrating incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in a primary election. Adams and Cuomo are in this year’s election as independents, and Warren dismissed them as only being concerned for the city’s wealthiest residents.

“Mamdani has charged ahead with plans to make New York more affordable, and he’s showing how to pay for it by taxing the ultra-rich and giant corporations,” she said. “That may not make him popular with the richest New Yorkers, but he’s willing to let Adams and Cuomo suck up to those guys.”

Warren’s endorsement comes as three of New York’s most prominent Democrats – Gov. Kathy Hochul, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakim Jeffries – have conspicuously avoided giving Mamdani their endorsements.
