So, have you read any good books lately? If you’re in the market for an engrossing and invigorating new book focused on the real estate world, here are five new titles that might satiate your bibliophile needs.
“The Agent’s Edge: Secret Strategies to Win Listings and Make Your Fortune Selling Real Estate” by Jordan Cohen (published by HarperCollins Leadership, available June 6)
Cohen is a six-time #1 RE/MAX agent with a celebrity client base including Sylvester Stallone (who wrote the foreword to the book) and more than a half-million followers on Instagram. His book offers a mix professional advice on the strategies he used to grow his business, along with personal anecdotes from his work on behalf of his A-list clients.
“I wanted to create something that would be a game-changer for real estate agents,” said Cohen. “‘The Agent’s Edge’ provides readers with all the tools I have learned throughout my career. My goal is that this will be a helpful resource for anyone looking to break into or advance their real estate career.”
“Boom! There Goes Your Resolve” by Al N. Filippone (independently published, now available)
Filippone began his real estate career in 1987 and leads a highly successful, $350 million-a-year, 50-person team at William Raveis in Connecticut’s Fairfield County. His new book is being promoted as a “must-read, informative guide to success for aspiring or current residential real estate agents, as well as homebuyers and sellers.” His chapters offer a tough love education, with chapters that include “How Owning Your Failures Leads to Success” and “Why Sometimes Losing is the Winning Move,” and he offers a distinctive sense of humor that will appeal to a real estate readership.
“In a down market there’s a saying: the perfect situation in life is to be the firstborn son, the second wife and the third realtor,” he said.
“The Dealmaker: How to Succeed in Business & Life Through Dedication, Determination & Disruption” by Mauricio Umansky (published by Galaxy Books, now available)
Reality television addicts will recognize Umansky from “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” (where he appears with wife Kyle Richards) and as star of his Netflix series “Buying Beverly Hills.” In his first book, Umansky offers what is described as “part memoir, part leadership manifesto” – offering his life’s lessons that culminated his founding his brokerage The Agency and professional insights for those eager to follow his lead into the real estate sphere.
“It’s meant to be a super easy read,” said Umansky in a Hollywood Reporter interview. “I didn’t want to write a how-to success book. It’s really meant to be through storytelling and life lessons that have shaped me to be an optimistic successful human being and hopefully people will have the same takeaway. For me, it’s about sharing back what I’ve learned.”
“The Essential Guide to the Dubai Real Estate Market” by Michael Waters (published by Routledge, now available)
Waters is an associate professor of real estate at Heriot-Watt University Dubai and his book is the first to offer a comprehensive analysis of one of the most invigorating corners of the global real estate environment. The book charts the Dubai market’s historical growth and forecasts its future trends while charting the market practices, economic trends and social change that impacts the value of real estate – including spatial planning, the economics of the city, regulation, sustainability and digitalization.
“Dubai is a fascinating real estate market and is one of the most attractive places to invest in, globally,” said Waters in an interview with the Khaleej Times. “As the market has evolved over the past 10 years and with the fluctuations as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, it felt appropriate to reflect on the sector’s growth, the value it offers, the trends that will shape the future and what buyers and investors can expect. The purpose of this book is to present the developments and showcase the evolution that has occurred and underpinned the market. It was also a way to provide background reading for real estate, business and finance students.”
“In the Black: Changing the Dominant Narrative in the Commercial Real Estate Industry” by T. Dallas Smith (published by Forbes Books, now available).
Smith is the founder and CEO at T. Dallas Smith & Co., an Atlanta-based commercial real estate firm specializing in tenant representation, and is also chairman of the Real Estate and Facilities Committee for the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and board member of the National Association of Realtors. In his book, Smith recalls his barrier-breaking work as the first Black broker at Cushman & Wakefield’s Atlanta operations while offering a guidebook for Black entrepreneurs hoping to enter the commercial real estate industry.
“I’m telling you my story because I want to speak the truth,” Smith said. “I want to leave everything on the table—the plans for the building, the keys to the front door—for the generation of Black men and women who come after me, so that their experiences in this profession will be that much better than my own.”
Phil Hall is the editor of WRE News and author of the new book “100 Years of Wall Street Crooks,” published by Bicep Books.
