The historic Wainwright Building in downtown St. Louis was sold in a government auction for $8.25 million.

According to St. Louis Public Radio, the 234,600-square-foot state office building is one of the nation’s first modern skyscrapers. The 10-story office building was designed by the prominent architect Louis Sullivan and opened in 1891. Frank Lloyd Wright hailed the Wainwright Building as “the very first human expression of a tall steel office-building as Architecture.”

The property, which houses state offices, is listed as a national historic landmark and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1968.

Arch to Park Equity LLC, a real estate fund coordinated by Greater St. Louis Inc. acquired the property in a GovDeals auction held on Aug. 29.
