The property was built in 1899 and served as Sondheim’s home since 1959. Sondheim was one of the most influential figures in American theater history – he began his career writing the lyrics for “West Side Story” and “Gypsy” and would later create both music and lyrics for classic productions including “Company,” “Follies,” “A Little Night Music” and “Sunday in the Park with George.” During his career, he received eight Tony Awards, eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, Academy Award and the Kennedy Center Honors, and he has theaters named after him in New York City and London.
