Structural demolition is scheduled to begin today on Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Memorial Stadium in Washington, DC.

Events DC announced the initial demolition will focus on “selective sections of the interior of the stadium and the removal of sections of exterior cladding.” Selective demolition on the several interior elements of the stadium and the abatement of hazard materials has already been completed.

RFK Stadium has fallen into disrepair and not been used since 2019. The National Park Service approved its demolition last spring, and the DC Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act that was signed into law late last month transferred the ownership of the stadium site from the federal government to the District of Columbia for a 99-year period.

The impetus for the new legislation was to encourage the Washington Commanders to return to the District of Columbia. The team now plays at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, but has not publicly expressed a desire to return to Washington.
