Tennessee voters will soon have the chance to permanently prevent the state from collecting property taxes.
WZTV reports that Tennessee’s constitution gives the state government the right to collect a property tax. But while there has not been a state property tax collection since 1946, a proposed constitutional amendment would ensure that authority is disabled for good.
The proposed amendment will appear on the November election ballot after passing a vote in the General Assembly. Toni Venable, director of Americans for Prosperity–Tennessee, warned that rising local property taxes are already forcing residents out of their homes, particularly in the Nashville area, adding the amendment was necessary to prevent the state legislature from potentially creating a new layer of taxation in the future.

If you do not have a property Tax and a State Income Tax, how and who pays the bills?
I am from CA, we have the opposite problem of over taxation.
Tom,
Currently, the state of TN does not set property tax rates or collect property taxes. Property tax rates are established and collected by TN cities and counties. The amendment in question would prevent the state of TN from setting and collecting property taxes in lieu if or in addition to the current practice of cities and counties doing so.
