Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced he is running for a fourth term, with a focus on property tax relief as a centerpiece of his campaign.

Texas Tribune reports the Republican Abbott made his announcement at a Sunday event where he pledged to ensure Texas remains a “bastion of common sense in a country reeling from far-left, progressive insanity.”

Abbott emphasized property tax relief would be a major concern in a potential fourth term, with the promise to build on the new property tax-related constitutional amendments approved by Texas voters last week.

“Local governments are hiking your property taxes incessantly,” he said. “It’s time to drive a stake through the heart of local property tax hikes for good.”

Abbott added Texans should be able to vote on abolishing school property taxes, adding that future property tax increases should require the approval of two-thirds of voters. He insisted Texans should have “the right to rollback property tax rates” and called for appraisals to take place only once every five years, with the appraisal cap being dropped from 10% to 3%.

Among his other re-election initiatives, Abbott called for the passage of private school vouchers, ending diversity and inclusion practices in schools, and barring transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports.
