An estimated half-million Britons left the UK during 2023, but where did the go? A new study by the international moving company comparison website Compare My Move has traced where this new wave of British expatriates is heading.

Spain is the most popular destination for outbound U.K. migration, attracting 14.1% of the departing Britons, followed by the U.S. with a 13.6% share and Australia at 11.2%. Rounding out the top 10 for the new expats are France (10.1%), Italy (6.7%), Germany (5.5%), United Arab Emirates (4.0%), New Zealand (3.8%), Ireland (3.2%) and Canada (3.2%).

“We expect Spain to stay a popular destination for British movers throughout 2024, possibly even growing in popularity due to the stagnant mortgage rates in the UK and the mortgage interest rates in Spain being around 2% lower than the UK,” said Dave Sayce, founder and managing director of Compare My Move. “While the USA will still be very popular due to the cultural similarities between the UK and the States, the uncertainty of the election outcome could see fewer people planning a move there for fear of any change in immigration laws. I’d also expect the United Arab Emirates and Dubai to do well this year, continuing their increase in popularity. Throughout the top 10 places to move to abroad, I think the number of movers will increase as more and more people look to living abroad as an option.”
