The Pierre, a historic five-star hotel overlooking New York City’s Central Park, is being marketed for sale.

According to a Bloomberg report sourced from unnamed “people familiar with the matter,” the landmark lodging property features 189 hotel rooms, restaurants and retail space. The hotel also includes 80 co-op apartments, which would not be included in any sale.

The 41-floor Fifth Avenue-based hotel opened in 1930 and was acquired by India’s Taj Hotels and Resorts in 2005. It has long attracted prominent guests including Aristotle Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor and Yves St. Laurent; Richard Nixon lived at the hotel before assuming the presidency in 1969.

Bloomberg identified Douglas Harmon, co-chairman of capital markets at Newmark Group Inc., as handling the sale. While Harmon declined to comment directly on the Pierre, he stated that “luxury hotels, especially those in marquee cities that provide branding opportunities, are a rare and hot commodity.” However, no listing price range was cited for a possible sale.
