The Trump administration has made an emergency request to the US Supreme Court to decide whether he has the authority to fire Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook.

The request follows an appeals court decision on Monday that rejected Trump’s efforts to fire Cook ahead of the central bank’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting. Trump has claimed he has the right to fire Cook for cause based on mortgage fraud accusations made against her by Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Cook has not been criminally charged and has denied Pulte’s accusations.

“That the Federal Reserve Board plays a uniquely important role in the American economy only heightens the government’s and the public’s interest in ensuring that an ethically compromised member does not continue wielding its vast powers,” said Solicitor General John Sauer in a court filing.
