A private island in upstate New York with a historic residence that welcomed prominent residents and visitors has been listed for $2.97 million.

Camp Northwind, located on an 8.6-acre island on Chazy Lake in the Adirondack Mountains, features a five-bedroom, five-bathroom residence built in 1928 for the opera singer Reinald Werrenrath. Over the years, it served as a retreat for First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and was owned by actress/model Brooke Shields.

“Joan Crawford and Clark Gable were reported vacationing there during the time Werrenrath owned the camp,” said listing agent Nancy White in an interview with Realtor.com. “There is nothing like it currently for sale in the entire Adirondack Park. It’s unique with the old sandstone from the ground up to the second level all around the main house.”

The 3,577-square-foot residence is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while the property also features a two-story boathouse with a game room and a boat slip.
