A West Virginia landmark known as the “Castle of the Coalfields” has been relisted after a potential sale fell through.
West Virginia Explorer reported the historic Itmann Company Store is available again at $250,000. It was originally listed in March 2023 for $499,000 but was discounted to $250,000 five months later.
The 23,000-square-foot complex in Itmann, West Virginia, is on National Register of Historic Places, which provides the property with access to special grants and tax credits. It was built between 1923 and 1925 as the company store and office complex for the Pocahontas Fuel Company, with architect Alexander B. Manhood designed the structure in a Classical Revival architectural style that was uncommon for the region. The property was acquired by West Virginia State Senator Billy Wayne Bailey in 1987 and later housed a post office and offices for nonprofit organizations.
David Sibray, a listing agent for Foxfire Realty, who said the property is generated a lot of interest.
“I’m fielding requests for information about the property daily now,” he said. “Tourism is enjoying unmatched growth here, especially where off-road tourism is concerned. More than 1,000 visit the castle on ATVs and side-by-sides every month in peak season.”
