Elected officials in the Sacramento area have announced plans for a $1.8 billion initiative to build a stadium for a potential Major League Baseball expansion team.

KCRA reports a new ballpark is being proposed for a 50-acre site in West Sacramento’s Bridge District. The project would involve a mixed-use development featuring housing, retail, and restaurants, with $800 million in financing coming from land and private investment and $1 billion from the city of West Sacramento through tax increment financing, existing hotel taxes and additional sources.

Mark Friedman, founder and chairman of Fulcrum Property and board chairman of the Greater Sacramento Economic Council, said that the private funding will come from two tribal nations, the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians and the United Auburn Indian community.

A new organization called The Sacramento Pitch has been formed to secure an expansion team. Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty, who is an honorary co-chairman for this organization, acknowledged, the work will be a “marathon, not a sprint.”

“Now, let’s be honest – this expansion process will be long,” McCarty said. “It will be competitive. It will be hard. It won’t be easy. But one thing is certain – “Sacramento is MLB-ready.”

West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero, who is also an honorary co-chairman, added, “We are ready to compete for a permanent MLB team. What excites me most about this vision is what it could mean for the future of our city. For years, we had envisioned the Bridge District as a vibrant, waterfront destination where people can live, work and gather. And that it has become.”
