The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has fired four employees of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for making an unauthorized transfer of $59 million to New York City hotels housing illegal immigrants.

DHS released a statement to Fox News announcing told Fox News that “four employees are being fired today for circumventing leadership and unilaterally making the egregious payment for hotels for migrants in New York City.” Media reports identified the four fired employees as FEMA Chief Financial Officer Mary Comans, two program analysts and a grant specialist.

The firings follow an announcement on X by Elon Musk that the Department of Government Efficiency discovered the $59 million was transferred in what Musk called a “gross insubordination to the President’s executive order. That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high end hotels for illegals!”

FEMA Acting Administrator Cameron Hamilton followed up on Musk’s revelation by declaring the payments were suspended. A spokesperson for New York City’s municipal government confirmed the receipt of the funds, adding that $19 million was budgeted for hotel costs and the remainder of the funds was targeted for food and security. The city’s spokesperson contradicted Musk by adding the funds were not taken from FEMA’s disaster relief grant money.
