New data from the Montana Department of Revenue has determined 80% of the state’s residential property owners received a property tax cut this year while 10% saw their property taxes remain flat year-over-year.
According to NBC Montana, recipients saw a property tax cut of over $500, not counting the up to $400 property tax rebate that is available to eligible homeowners. Over 235,000 Montana homeowners have claimed and received a property tax rebate.
Roughly 80% of Montana’s residential property taxes are managed at the local level and fund local government services while the remainder goes to the state for funding K-12 public schools.
State officials credited Senate Bill 542, which creates a new structure of tiered tax rates, for these figures. More cuts are on the way – starting in 2026, the new Homestead Rate that provides a new lower property tax rate for long-term rentals and primary residences goes into effect.
