Now, here is something that you don’t see every day: a neighborhood was evacuated after the discovery of what is suspected to be a bomb from World War II.
BreakingNews.ie reported that residents in more than 400 homes were ordered out of the area when the bomb was discovered in the Rivenwood area of Newtownards of Northern Ireland’s County Down. The operation to clear the eight-decade-old device could take more than five days.
An emergency support center has been set up for impacted households. North Down and Ards District Commander Superintendent Johnston McDowell commended the households for their cooperation, stating, “This is a significant number of properties, and we thank residents for their patience and understanding.”
Authorities have not detail where or how the device was discovered, or if it was an Allied or Axis bomb. During World War II, German air raids of Northern Ireland in April and May 1941 resulted in the deaths of 1,100 civilians. American military personnel were stationed in Northern Ireland beginning in May 1942.
