A woman who gained notoriety for attempting a deed theft scam on the mansion of a dentist in Raleigh, North Carolina, has obviously not learned any lessons from her miscreant shenanigans.
WRAL reported that Dawn Mangum was arrested and charged with felony last September when she filed a fraudulent deed on Craig Adams’ home. At the time, Mangum claimed she thought the property was a vacant foreclosure.
However, Mangum has become something of a familiar presence at the register’s office. According to Wake County Register of Deeds Tammy Brunner, Mangum allegedly filed two liens by mail when she was in jail on charges related to Adams’ home, but the paperwork was rejected due to technical errors. When she was released from jail, she tried to file a deed on a second home, but that was also rejected.
“The signature and what she wrote afterwards just looked weird to [the clerk] so, she took it to her supervisor which, that is what they’re supposed to do, and the supervisor is supposed to figure out what happens next,” Brunner said. “The supervisor took the document, started waiting on Ms. Mangum and looked at the deed of the actual property of the record that Ms. Mangum was trying to record that day. And when she looked it up, she saw that Ms. Mangum wasn’t anywhere on the deed.”
As for her infatuation with Adams’ home, Mangum returned in person for a title search on the property. Brunner stated, “I told her we don’t do title searches, that would be a title search company. And she asked for a marketable title certificate – which we also don’t do.”
And what became of Mangum after that? “She just left,” the clerk said.
